To FB, or not to FB? That is the Question!

This week, Danica and I partnered to discuss the pros and cons of Facebook. Now, Facebook is something that is often seen as a social media site where people connect with their families and friends, but it has evolved into something much bigger…

  • Companies can promote themselves.
  • People can create pages for their businesses, brands, and organizations.
  • Individuals can form and join groups that connect them with others from around the world.

This brings one to wonder, does Facebook have a spot in today’s classrooms? Danica and I took the time to brainstorm and research some of the pros and cons.

In summary, here are some reasons NOT to use Facebook in the classroom:

To summarize why Facebook CAN be beneficial in today’s classrooms:

  • Students are familiar with the technology, and it allows them to feel comfortable rather than having to be introduced to new apps/websites such as Blackboard or Google Classroom.
  • It has customization for almost everything, from layout, to the algorithm, to privacy. Students can alter it to suit their needs, and teachers do not have to worry about the wrong information/details being shared (both our own and that of our students) if these settings are taken into consideration.
  • It allows students to effectively collaborate and engage with each other. Students can comment on posts, share to each other’s walls, add links and resources, and be exposed to a variety of different viewpoints to expand their own learning.
  • It is also a great place for teacher collaboration! Educators can use tools such as “Facebook Live” to bring in experts or share the goings-on of your classroom with parents, other teachers, and students.

  1. This is a very interesting debate, one that I would have never considered. I would not have thought about bringing Facebook to the classroom. But you have kind of shifted my thinking around it, it could be a useful tool in the classroom. I think I agree with Danica in a sense that it would depend if all of those students already have Facebook and if their parents/ guardians consent to the idea. But, that goes with almost any app you use in the classroom too. Great videos and I like that you linked the ideas to your sources. Thank you for sharing.

    1. It is definitely one of those tools that has its pros and cons. I think if careful planning is done, it can be used well! It all comes down to careful consideration of how it is used.

  2. You two made a compelling point that students will be familiar with Facebook and will probably be easy to use for them. However, as you said, there are many other tools and apps that can be used instead. There are many that are very user-friendly, so much so that even younger students will be able to use them!

  3. This is a very interesting topic and I think that you and Danica explored it well. Personally, I prefer Facebook to be a personal space, however, I do see how having something like a school Facebook Page where parents/guardians can see what is going on at school, see reminders to hand forms in, see practice times and schedules, etc. could be useful. I would agree with Daniels statement that there are other apps and tools such as Remind or SeeSaw that may be more beneficial for younger students or for a class instead of the entire school. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it is always interesting to see where people stand in debates such as these!
